There’s a BABY on the way!

By Ericka Jackson | August 22, 2012

For those of you who follow our blog and facebook, you may remember Baby Leah, who was born in January. Isn’t she adorable?!

*Thanks to Andres Valenzuela Photography for this beautiful photo!

Leah is just one of several babies who came to Asha House as a newborn. As a matter of fact, Leah’s mother lived at the house for several months of her pregnancy, so that she could get prenatal care and proper nourishment for her baby.

Unfortunately, many women in India get pregnant out of wedlock as a result of rape or prostitution. Leah’s mom is just one example. Most of these women live in poverty, and have no way to care for themselves or a baby. They often attempt abortions or suicide out of desperation. Because girls are devalued in Indian culture, female babies are often strangled or suffocated at birth or abandoned on the street.

But there is good news! The staff at Asha House have realized that this is a serious issue and they’ve stepped in to help. In recent years, Asha House has become a safe place for pregnant women, like Leah’s mom, to go when they are in trouble. The staff takes them in, cares for them during their pregnancy, covers the cost of their hospital stay, and provides a loving home for their child after birth. Baby Leah, Aksha, Abigail, Tabitha, and Ashish were all born this way – and they are thriving at Asha House!

And now there is another baby on the way!

The new baby is due this month, and we need additional funding to cover the cost of the birth. Just $1,250 will cover the total cost of the hospital stay to make sure this mom & baby are taken care of during labor and delivery. Will you give to this need?
