Update from India :: Aksha & Jyoti
We’re so excited to share an update about our two sweet girls in India, Aksha and Jyoti. A few months ago, we blogged about some upcoming medical needs for these girls. Jyoti had been suffering from seizures and blackouts due to parasites in her brain, and the last treatment the doctor prescribed hadn’t healed her. Even though she’s 7 years old, she has been unable to go to school because of her health issues. She needed to see a new specialist, which would cost $480.
We also told you about Aksha, a 3 month old baby girl who had already been hospitalized with high fevers and other serious symptoms. The doctors thought she might have a hole in her heart, and she needed to see a pediatric cardiologist. This appointment would cost yet another $480.
We asked you to help, and you responded! The money needed for these two appointments came in quickly, and because of your generosity, the girls were able to get the medical care they needed!
After quite a few tests and an echocardiogram, we found out that Aksha does not have a hole in her heart! (Praise God!) She does, however, have serious issues with her lungs. We learned from our partners in India that her mother was young and unmarried, and hadn’t wanted the baby – so she tried several times to abort this sweet child. Because of those abortion attempts, and the fact that her mother didn’t get the prenatal care that she needed, Aksha has been prone to lung infections. The doctor recommended 6 months of medication for her, and so far she’s responded very well!
Jyoti saw a new doctor, who has prescribed antibiotics to kill the parasites in her brain. She will be taking them every month for a year, with the hope of a full recovery! If she doesn’t have any seizures or blackouts for at least 2 months, then she will be able to start school. We’re so excited to see her making steps toward health and we’re hoping this treatment will keep her from being too far behind in school.
The total cost for these 2 doctor’s appointments, Jyoti’s 12 months of treatment, and Aksha’s 6 months of treatment was $2,700. This amount would have been impossible to raise for our partners in India – but several of you stepped up and gave. Now these 2 girls have 18 months of treatment between them PAID IN FULL!!!
Thank you for always being so generous and willing to help when we share a need on our blog. When you DONATE, share a link on FACEBOOK, or TWEET these needs to your followers, you make a real difference in the lives of these children!
We’re headed to India in November, and we can’t wait to “introduce you” to these girls via video. Be sure to sign up for our blog updates in the upper right corner of this page so you’ll be able to follow our work while we’re overseas!
