Flooding at The Promised Land Project

By Ericka Jackson | August 27, 2011

The past month has brought heavy rains to Northern Thailand. Mudslides have killed several people in the villages by the river banks, and even in Chiang Mai, several neighborhoods have had flood damage. We are sad to report that The Promised Land Property, which we’ve been working to develop since January, was hit by a major flood that redirected the course of the nearby river. The land is threatened as flooding has already taken out one of the main access roads and the front gate.

Because of the way the river has redirected, more land could be flooded if action isn’t taken. Our partners are working right now with other villagers to convince the local government to build a concrete embankment that will protect the land.

We wanted to share this information with all of our current and potential donors in an effort to maintain transparency with our work. We want to reassure you that the plan for The Promised Land Project that we shared in this video, and this video has not changed. This Children’s Home will still be a place where children are rescued from poverty, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and the violence in Burma. It will still be a place where children are offered holistic care, including an education and learning sustainable life skills like farming and fishing.  At this time, we have raised almost 60% of the funds needed to begin building the Children’s Home, however, we are working with our partners to determine the best place to build. We are considering a new location that would not be threatened by flooding. We want to make the best decision for the children we will care for, and use the funds donated for this project in the most responsible way.

The good news is, the agricultural part of the land was not harmed in the flood! The crop of rice is still growing and will be harvested as planned. We are also incredibly thankful for the timing of this flood. Though it is a tragedy, we are grateful the Children’s Home was not yet built and no children were harmed!

Despite this natural disaster, we still believe in this project, and we know it will be successful! We are continuing to raise the funds needed to make The Promised Land Project a reality, as we research the best way to move forward. If you feel led to donate, CLICK HERE.
