Asha Mission :: Continue the Construction

By Ericka | July 01, 2013

According to UNICEF, there are more than 31 million orphans in India. Orphans and vulnerable children in this country are often kidnapped and sold into prostitution, slavery, or murdered for organ harvesting. Impoverished children are also at risk of malnutrition and diseases like leprosy and HIV/AIDS.

The Sound of Hope has partnered with Asha Mission Children’s Homes to rescue orphans and vulnerable children from the streets, slums, brothels, and leper colonies. These precious little boys and girls are quickly accepted into their new family, where they are free to laugh and play with their “brothers and sisters”. In addition to meeting their basic needs of food, clothing, and a safe home; they receive an education, mentoring, medical care, and lots of love from the house parents and staff!

We are seeing the children at the Asha Mission home really grow and thrive. But as more and more children have been rescued, they’ve run out of space! Right now, there are 37 children and 4 staff members living in a 1,500 square foot home. There are only 2 small bedrooms for the children, no room to study, and no space to play! The front door opens out into a street – so there’s no yard to play in. Currently there are only 2 bathrooms for over 40 people to share!

They also face many challenges living in a rental home. They have an expensive rental payment each month, and the owners can increase the price any time they want. They also face the risk of being forced to move at any time if the owners decide they want to rent to someone other than the Children’s Home.

Our dream for these children, is a big, beautiful, permanent home! This will be a home with plenty of space for the children and staff – and room to grow too! In June of 2012 we took the first step toward making this home a reality, by buying a big piece of land in Delhi. In March of 2013 we were thrilled to see construction start on the foundation!

The plans for the new Children’s Home are incredible! Instead of the 1,500 square feet they’ve been living in, this home will have 5,000 square feet of living space on the first floor alone! This plan also leaves room to grow to 3-5 stories in the future.

The new home will have multiple, spacious rooms for the girls and boys in separate sections of the home (for privacy). Instead of only 2 bathrooms – there will be 4 bathrooms for boys, 4 for girls, and one in each staff room. There will be a new kitchen, storage room, and large meeting room for church services and other events. There will also be a nice dining room that will be used for a study room between meals. We plan to add a small Children’s Library to this area as well.

Perhaps our favorite part of the new house though, is the yard! There will be 2,000 square feet of “green space” in the courtyard, which will be used for a play space and also to add a small garden for the home. This will be a way to supplement the children’s meals with fresh vegetables, and to teach them how to garden as well!

Once this home is finished, it will provide HOPE for orphans and vulnerable children in India for generations to come. And YOU can be a part of making it happen! It will cost $180,000 to build this home, but right now we need $25,000 as soon as possible! The rental home the children are currently living in is in disrepair, so we want to finish the new house quickly. $25,000 will insure that the construction process is not interrupted. We don’t want anything to delay this important project!
